CULTUREMy Paris Edit: Full Luxe, Full Drama
Where I stayed, ate, shopped, and sipped my way through this lux
Paris is synonymous with luxury — not just in gilded palaces and couture houses, but in the everyday moments that feel impossibly elevated. When I first came here as a broke college kid, I lived off bakery sandwiches, cheap white wine, and free views. And honestly? It was still magical.
On my triumphant return (as an adult with an income), I went all in. This time I leaned into the city’s flair for the dramatic — the grand hotels, the candlelit dinners, the over-the-top nights out. Paris isn’t a place for half-measures; it rewards indulgence.
These are the places where I let myself experience it in full: a little luxe, a lot of drama, and entirely unforgettable.
Where to Stay: Hôtel Dame Des Arts
This Left Bank gem feels equal parts boutique and cinematic. I had a balcony with a postcard view of the Eiffel Tower, and every morning I sat there being the most basic kind of tourist — espresso in hand, staring at the skyline like it was my first time seeing it. The hotel décor is chic without trying too hard, and the rooftop bar is one of the best perches in the city. Staying here means you don’t just visit Paris; you wake up inside it.
Dinner at Le Comptoir Boutary
For me, this casual spot nails modern French dining. The focus is on caviar (yes, caviar), and I didn’t expect to love it on everything — but I did. Caviar on potatoes, caviar on eggs, caviar on dishes I didn’t know could handle caviar. Each bite felt like a tiny revelation, reminding me why Paris is the epicenter of gastronomy: indulgent, surprising, and never dull.
A Moulin Rouge Night
I saw the Féerie Revue show at the Moulin Rouge — a flurry of feathers, sequins, and rhinestones that’s as over-the-top as it gets. The legendary French Cancan was every bit as joyful and high-kicking as I hoped, and the singing and dancing numbers delivered pure spectacle. What really amazed me, though, were the acrobatics. At one point, a man balanced upside down on his head on a bottle — no hands — and the whole room collectively gasped. The musical numbers were corny, but the flips and tricks make it worthwhile.
Dinner Cruise on the Seine: Le Calife
There are dozens of riverboats in Paris, but Le Calife is in a league of its own — intimate, impossibly elegant, with food that genuinely holds its own against the view. The timing is perfect: you drift through the heart of the city, and just as dessert lands on your table, the boat pulls up beside the Eiffel Tower as the light show begins. It was one of those “is this real life?” moments that felt scripted in the best way.
Shopping the Marais: My Favorites
The Marais is where cool collides with shopping, and Rue de Bretagne is my anchor. We spent an afternoon wandering from shop to shop. A few places I loved:
Empreintes is a concept store spotlighting French craftsmanship and design. I bought a few pieces of handcrafted art here, but my favorite is a delicate piece made from robin eggshells, painted in the most luminous shade of blue.
Monsieur Jewelry – Sleek, architectural pieces that feel distinctly Parisian.
Pierre Hermé – Macarons taken to haute-couture levels (yes, they’re $$$, but even just one is worth it).
Poilâne – Ina Garten’s favorite bakery, and now mine too. The round sourdough loaves are legendary.
Merci – A design and lifestyle store that feels like a cultural hub, perfect for gifts and inspiration.
WHITEbIRD – A jewelry shop where every piece feels like a future heirloom.
Dinner at Le Clarence
Housed in an 18th-century mansion, Le Clarence is fine dining turned theater. From the moment you walk in, you feel rich — the chandeliers, the gilt, the hushed reverence of the space. Every part of the meal had a story, even the butter for the bread. By the time the final course arrived, I was so full I thought I couldn’t possibly eat another bite — and then the chef himself came out, sealing the evening as one of the most memorable meals of my life.
Nightcap at the Hemingway Bar
Inside the Ritz, the Hemingway Bar is legendary, and it lived up to the hype. We met two close friends there, sank into the leather chairs, and laughed our way through some of the best cocktails I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is dark, glamorous, and timeless, but what I’ll remember most is how easy it felt: Paris at its most sophisticated, but shared with people who made it feel like home.
Why These Places Matter
Each of these favorites captures what Paris does best: blending culture, luxury, and a bit of theater. They reminded me that Paris isn’t a city to be “done” — it’s a city to be surrendered to.
When I first came as a student, Paris was baguettes on park benches and sneaking into free museum days. On this return, it was balconies, champagne, and dinners that felt like theater. Both versions were unforgettable, but this time I could finally gave in to the full drama of the city — and that, I think, is the real magic of Paris.
